What began on a shop stoop in 2021 now carries 240 members. The ledger is read out every Sunday and the money sits in a bank account with three signatories.

The committee

Tesfaye Gebremedhin
Chairperson
A textile trader in Merkato and one of the eight founders. He chairs the meeting and runs the draw.
Almaz Demissie
Treasurer
She collects contributions, deposits them at Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, and posts every receipt on Telegram.
Dawit Mekonnen
Secretary
He keeps the member register and draw record, and reads the minutes at every meeting.
